Had to ask grandpa for that one. He was on the job from 71 to 96. He said you had to be 5'5" minimum, 21 years of age or older, be able to read and write and be of good character (no criminal record/history), no physical disabilities.
Way he got the job is he got approached at his boxing club after a fight night (he scored a KO for those interested) and the sergeant met with him as he got off the ring to tell him that if he wanted a job, he should swing by the station the next morning. He did and got hired on the spot. He was sent for training a couple of weeks later and did 25 years before retiring and opening a business.
