El Dorado State Park is located 3 miles east of El Dorado, Kansas on Hwy 54 and 1 mile north. The park office can be reached at (316) 321-7180, Monday thru Friday, 8a to 4:30p. The lake consists of approximately 8,000 surface acres of water, 4,500 acres of park lands and 3,500 acres of wildlife area. Management of the reservoir resources has been granted to the Ks. Dept. of Wildlife and Parks. The park consists of four primary campgrounds which include the following amenities: a full service marina; a sailing club; approximately 1,000 campsites, some with utilities some without; picnic shelters; rental cabins; trails for horses, hiking and bicycles; swim beaches; shower houses and restrooms; ADA playgrounds; boat ramps and a laundry facility. An overlook structure constructed of native limestone is located on the left bank of the lake adjacent to the buildings and provides an excellent view of the dam and lake. The approach to the overlook is a bridged ramp designed for easy access and use by the handicapped. From October 15 to April 15, rainbow trout are stocked in the Walnut River channel below the dam. The trout are stocked on a bi-monthly rotation and have become a favorite of many local anglers. A trout permit is required to fish in the area and anglers may take a limit of five trout per day. The possession limit of trout is 15. Trout fishing is only permitted between the hours of 6:00 a.m and 7:00 p.m. The lower half of the lake has steep, rocky shorelines. Approximately half of the timber in the reservoir basin was left standing. Much of the timber that was clear-cut below existing city lakes was stacked into piles and rows to serve as fish attractors. A portion of the standing timber on the west shoreline was also placed as fish attractors. These fish attractors are anchored in areas where water depths range from 6 to 18 feet. The standing timber and fish attractors are marked with buoys for easy location.
